In the fall of 1976, The Poppees, one of the seminal Power Pop bands on the New York City’s New Wave/Punk Rock scene came to an end. Drummer Jett Harris and lead guitarist Arthur Alexander left the band and by early winter of ‘77, Arthur’s new band – SORROWS – in its first incarnation, was already out playing gigs. Arthur picked the name for the vibe it projected, but purposely omitted the expected “THE”, to give it a more conceptual meaning and set his new band apart from The Sorrows, a great British band of the mid 60’s. He’s been busy crossing out the “The’s” and correcting people ever since. So yes, the band’s name is SORROWS, no ‘THE’!… Got it?!..
Unhappy with how things were taking shape, Arthur dissolved the lineup and called up Jett asking him if he’d join the band. Jett asked: ”what’s the concept behind the band?”… “ABBA meets The Sex Pistols”, said Arthur…. Jett’s reply: “I’m in, when do we start?!”. Joey Cola joined the line up soon after on guitar and 2nd lead vocal, and after a long hunt for the right bass player the band enlisted Ricky Street to provide the low end and the 3rd lead vocal.
Musically, with their roots spanning early rock & roll, rockabilly, through the 60’s Pop and R&B, right into the hard-edged sound of New York City’s New Wave and Punk Rock, SORROWS are all about ‘the song’ – strong melodies, irresistible hooks, fueled by their powerful backbeat and hard driving guitars…. .. SORROWS went on to score the coveted “major label” record deal and though ending up the label’s best kept secret as well, they still managed to leave behind two critically acclaimed albums and several singles which become highly sought after collector items…
That was then… this is now….
